How It All Started
Founded by Helen Hughes, an experienced swimming educator with over 30 years of teaching, the Orca swim trainer was created from a passion for helping children enjoy safe, confident, and progressive learning in the water.
Inspired by years of working with young swimmers, the Orca Swim Trainer was designed to support natural movement, build water confidence, and make every swimming journey fun, engaging, and rewarding for children, families, and swimming professionals alike.
Frequently asked questions
The Orca Swim Trainer is a teacher-led buoyancy support tool designed to help young children explore movement and develop swimming skills in structured, supervised aquatic environments. It supports early aquatic learning by encouraging good body position, movement exploration, and progressive independence.
The Orca is designed as a progressive learning tool, which means the float pads are gradually removed as your child builds confidence and skill. Keeping all the pads in place indefinitely would limit your child's development. Under the guidance of their teacher, buoyancy is reduced over time encouraging children to move more independently in the water. This is how real progress happens.
Swimming is taught by qualified instructors through structured, progressive teaching methods — the Orca supports that process. It creates the conditions in which learning can take place more effectively, helping children maintain body position and build confidence so their teacher can focus on developing real skills.
Choose based on your child's age and body weight as a starting guide. Our sizing is as follows: X-Small suits most children aged 2–3 years; Small is for ages 3–4; Medium for ages 4–5; and Large for ages 5–6. If your child is between sizes, choose by body weight and fit rather than age alone — the Orca should fit snugly around the torso without restricting movement. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering and we will help you choose.
